GAMI'S RISE FROM THE BEDROOM TO THE CLUB SCENE
Gami is a self-taught DJ from Wellington, NZ. His journey began in a close friend's bedroom down the road from his home after seeing a mate try spinning at pre's before a hectic night out in June 2019. Gami started small, wanting to play a set for his friends after a month of mixing on a set of Pioneer DDJ-SX decks. After a successful set, he decided to keep on practicing in his spare time and set his sights on playing another set at pre's after another month. The subsequent set was an even bigger success and he once again set the bar even higher for himself, now reaching out to a local organisation known as The A.M Club who had been hosting DnB nights every Wednesday to showcase up & coming DJ's in the area. They took a chance on him and on November 6th he took to Drum & Betty's for their 6th installation to show what he could do in front of his supportive friends and family. Safe to say he brought the noise that night. Big crowd, big tunes and he'd successfully gotten his foot in the door in the club scene. That night went so well that he was invited back to play another set the following month! Long story short, Drum & Betty's Vol. 7 was yet another triumph. At this stage he didn't own his own set of decks as mixing was just something he'd picked up in his own time. He'd realized that his little hobby could be about to evolve into something so much more, and he was going to need decks of his own sooner rather than later if he wanted to keep the pace that he'd set. The pressure to obtain his own set was heightened after being selected as an opening DJ for Rene LaVice in February 2020 as a collaboration between The A.M Club and Coastal Promotions. The opportunity served as a huge learning experience for Gami, as he was able to get first-hand exposure to the quality and level of mixing he was aiming to reach. Since coming out of New Zealand's lockdown over April and May 2020 he's performed at a few more sets at Betty's and Edison's that eventually led him to open the A.M Club's stage at Madhouse Festival in October. The plan is to play in as many cities in New Zealand as possible, and ultimately playing on stage at Rhythm & Vines 2021.
